SOUNDS LIKE – TAME IMPALA, PINK FLOYD, LES RYTHMES DIGITALES
There aren’t many bands whose individual side projects make me froth at the mouth, but when the all-conquering Tame Impala’s drummer Jay Watson decided to channel his inner swagger into a solo alias ‘GUM’ and create beautiful funky fuzziness, I was hooked.
‘Anesthetized Lesson’ is the first single from GUM’s cosmic second album, and much like the Tame Impala’s infectious hit ‘Let It Happen’, this track blurs the lines between psychedelic rock and the synth-driven dance music that commandeered the clubs of the 80’s, and makes no apologies for its punchiness.
Jay’s heavily back-beated style of drum loops have become one of the trademark sounds of Tame Impala, and teamed here with some filthy synth basslines and Jefferson Starship-esque power chords that tease the limits of social decency, I’m surprised ‘Anesthetized Lesson’ doesn’t come with an appropriate parental guidance rating. It’s a heavily layered musical concoction that’s equal parts dirty disco and youthful rock attitude, and after taking a few whiffs I can say with confidence that I fucking love it.
You can catch Jay Watson performing as GUM at a special supporting gig at Ding Dong Lounge on November the 8th, and find out more about his upcoming releases here.
